The Eyewear Wardrobe: Why One Pair of Glasses Is NEVER Enough
We talk a lot about building a wardrobe, investing in the right coat, finding the perfect pair of jeans, choosing shoes for different occasions and collecting those pieces that make getting dressed feel a little more you.
So why, when it comes to something we wear right in the middle of our face, do we so often expect one pair to do absolutely everything?
At Occhiali, we like to think about eyewear a little differently.
Glasses aren’t simply something you need in order to see. They’re part of how you dress, how you express yourself and, quite often, one of the first things another person notices about you.
That’s where the idea of an eyewear wardrobe comes in.
And you don’t need a drawer overflowing with frames to create one either! We think there are just three key pieces that make a brilliant foundation.
Pair One: The Everyday Essential
First, you need the pair you instinctively reach for.
Your everyday essential should feel comfortable, effortless and unmistakably you. It’s the frame that works on a Monday morning, at work, out for dinner and on those days when you’ve given your outfit approximately thirty seconds of thought.
But everyday certainly doesn’t have to mean boring.
For one person, their essential might be a beautifully understated lightweight frame. For another it could be chunky acetate, an interesting shape or a colour that has simply become part of their signature look.
The important thing is versatility.
Think of this pair like the great jacket, your favourite jumper or that perfectly fitting pair of jeans in your wardrobe. It’s reliable, but you still feel good every time you put it on.
Pair Two: The Alternative
Now things get a little more interesting.
Your second pair is an opportunity to do something different.
Maybe it’s bolder. Maybe it’s more playful. Perhaps it introduces a shape, colour, material or proportion that you wouldn’t necessarily choose for your everyday pair.
It doesn’t even have to be a traditional statement frame. We actually prefer to think of it simply as the alternative.
If your everyday glasses are bold acetate, your alternative might be a fine metal frame. If you normally gravitate towards something understated, this might be where you experiment with colour. If your first pair is beautifully classic, perhaps your second introduces something more sculptural or unexpected.
The point is contrast.
Changing your eyewear can completely alter the mood of what you’re wearing. The same outfit can suddenly feel more creative, more polished, more playful or more dramatic simply by changing what’s on your face.
We do it with shoes, jewellery, bags. So why not with our eyewear too?
Pair Three: A Great Pair of Sunglasses
The final piece of our three-pair wardrobe is one we think deserves far more consideration than it sometimes gets.
A genuinely great pair of sunglasses.
Not the pair hurriedly bought at the airport because you forgot yours. Not something chosen purely because it was simply practical.
A pair you absolutely love wearing.
Sunglasses have an incredible ability to transform a look and give you an opportunity to explore another side of your personal style. You might choose something oversized and glamorous, beautifully minimal, colourful, architectural or completely different from your optical eyewear.
And, of course, they have an important job to do too. The right lenses offer protection from UV while prescription sun lenses mean those of us who require vision correction don’t have to choose between seeing clearly and reaching for our favourite sunglasses.
Practical? Absolutely!
But they should still look fantastic.
Take the Three-Pair Test
So, take a look at your current eyewear collection and ask yourself three questions:
Do I have a pair I love wearing almost every day?
Do I have an alternative that gives me a completely different look?
Do I own a pair of sunglasses that I genuinely look forward to wearing?
(If you answered no to one of them, you may just have discovered the missing piece in your eyewear wardrobe!)
And Then?
Three pairs aren't the limit.
They're the foundation.
Once you stop thinking about eyewear as a single practical purchase and start treating it as part of your wardrobe, things become much more interesting.
Perhaps your next pair is the colourful one. The beautifully minimal one. The oversized one. The unusual one you would never have imagined yourself wearing until you put it on.
Or perhaps it's simply a frame that makes absolutely no practical sense to add to your collection, other than the fact that you tried it on, looked in the mirror and loved it.
We think that's a perfectly good reason too.
Because ultimately, building an eyewear wardrobe isn't about owning more glasses for the sake of it.
It's about having choice.
The choice to dress differently, to change the mood, to be understated one day and a little more adventurous the next, to match your glasses to your outfit.
Your clothes don't have to tell the same story every day.
Neither should your eyewear.
